First Line Friday – 21 September 2018 – Lies We Tell Ourselves (Amy Matayo)

first-line-fridays31

Welcome to First Line Friday, hosted by Hoarding Books! I have fantastic book for you this week—so long as you’re not looking for something light and fluffy. It’s bold and it’s raw and it has SUCH an important message. It’s Lies We Tell Ourselves by Amy Matayo, and it released yesterday. Stay tuned for my review tomorrow!

~ About the Book ~

Presley Waterman is a rescuer: of animals, of businesses, of people. Like the stray cat she’s allergic to, but continues to care for. Like her small-town newspaper, a business that’s been dying a slow death for the better part of a decade. And like Micah. Her best friend and the man she has loved since they were kids, back when no one else cared.

As for him… Micah Leven loves Presley. She’s the girl who’s always been there to help, the one who knows all the ugly things about him and makes him believe he can be a better man, the one who will never leave because she’s promised over and over.  But he also loves Mara.

Mara is his ideal. She’s the dream he conjured up as a boy and never wavered from. She’s beautiful, ambitious, driven, a fellow newscaster at his Atlanta station, and the perfect asset for the life he’s always wanted. Together, they could conquer the world and their respective careers. Even better, with Mara he could prove that he did—in fact—finally amount to something. Maybe then his father would be proud.

There are just a few things Presley and Micah have both forgotten. One, just because you rescue someone doesn’t mean they’ll love you for it. Two, some dreams disappear when reality wakes you up. Three, the only way to silence lies is to face the truth head-on.

This is the story of the man torn between two existences, the woman who finally took the choice away from him, and what happens when you stop listening to lies once and for all. Even if the biggest liar is you.

  3. Sounds good! Love that first line. On my blog, I’m featuring Karen Witemeyer’s novella, “The Love Knot.” Since I’m still reading it, I will share the first lines in Chapter 7. “Claire pushed away from the paddock fence when she saw Pieter exit the station house. Her heart ached with yearning at the sight of him. She still loved him. Desperately. But she wouldn’t pledge her life to a man until she was certain of him.” I wish you a relaxing fall weekend. Cooler weather has finally arrived in Michigan.

  5. Happy Friday!😊

My first lines come from Snowfall on Lighthouse Lane by JoAnn Ross…..

Life, as Aiden Mannion knew firsthand, could be dangerous. Anything could happen. You could be hit by a taxi while sightseeing in Times Square. Run headfirst into a tree while shushing down a diamond run pretending you were Bode Miller.

Have a great weekend and Happy Fall!💕

  10. The book I shared this week is Freedom’s Light by Colleen Coble but I’m currently reading an ARC of The Liberty Bride by MaryLu Tyndall so I’ll share the first line here: “What would it feel like to drown…to float listlessly down… down… beneath the chilled waters of the Atlantic?” I can honestly say I don’t want to find out! Hope you have a great weekend with lots of reading time! 🙂
